Co-curricular Leigh Academy Cherry Orchard
Outdoor learning
At Leigh Academy Cherry Orchard we have a brand-new purpose build outdoor classroom in our Woodland Area, which will be used as a base for both our outdoor learning as well as other extra-curricular activities. It is surrounded by a woodland area with planters adopted by each class to develop our edible garden.
The area and Rotunda Building is also used by our Early Years as a base for Forest School and provides opportunities for children to plant, grow, sow and harvest their own fruit and vegetables. To complement and enhance the ‘healthy living’ style of the edible garden, we are just about to add several activity trim trail stations around the area.
Children are encouraged to grow herbs, fruits and vegetables that can be used in the school kitchen in ‘taster sessions’ and we have plans to introduce a healthy snack bar once a week during playtimes, using any surplus fruit or veg.
Student council
We have a thriving School Council with representatives from each class meeting every week to discuss ideas for improvement. Students communicate with their peers in Year groups 2 – 6 to discuss and liaise with staff on areas that the children feel can be improved for the benefit of the school community. The projects and ideas are started and developed by them and supported by the staff. The School Council have helped with litter picking projects, updating mirrors to the Year 5 and 6 bathrooms, helping to get new pegs for the cloakrooms and shared ideas for how to improve playtimes as well as led many fundraising projects. The School Council representatives are able to share pupil voice throughout their time in the role.
School sports teams
Leigh Academy Cherry Orchard is part of the Dartford District Schools sports calendar, flourishing in a wide-variety of sports. We partake regularly in inter-school football competitions from year 3-6, with both our boys and girls sides becoming competitive forces in the local community. Our staff and PE Lead take on extra-curricular club activities to identify and establish any talented youngsters and give them the opportunity to take part in organised and progressive sporting fixtures. For example, we have attended netball, rugby, table tennis, badminton and cricket competitions within the last 12 months. We also invest heavily into workshops for children of sports that are not often practised or found within local communities. Beatboxing, street dance and breakdancing have become popular sessions for all age groups within LACO.Our school minibus gives us the freedom to join the extensive sporting programmes available throughout Kent will allow for children – no matter their background – to attend and develop their skills and experience in interclub competitions.

We also offer extended wrap-around childcare from 7:30am to 6pm via our Breakfast Club and After School Provision, to support our working parents, as we are on the Ebbsfleet – London commuting line. Children are given breakfast and a light tea and are involved in an activities’ timetable on a two-week rotation including quizzes, karaoke, scavenger hunts, cooking and film nights.
PTA
Our PTA hosts regular school discos, as well as supporting us with our christmas events such as our Festival of Lights and providing a range of stalls for our summer fair. Their fundraising efforts have provided all pupils from Year 1 up with their own headsets and new furniture for our quiet are.
Young Voices at the O2
Every year Leigh Academy Cherry Orchard are represented at the O2 where our choir take part in the annual festival of choirs, under the instruction of our music lead.
Golden Afternoon Activities
Each term children take part in an afternoon of activities of their choice, across the school such as making slime, science experiments, drama workshops, cooking and debates as well as other crafting and sporting activities. These activities are used as incentives to support our behaviour management system and children sign up at the beginning of the term and work towards maintaining their time at their chosen activity. This allows the children to mix with other teachers and adults in their year group alongside their peers, making transition from year group to year group less daunting. In Reception the children take part in a Golden Afternoon each week so they can begin to understanding working towards a reward for a shorter period of time.
Theme Days & Events
At Leigh Academy Cherry Orchard, we are committed to celebrating world events that are based on a theme and learning opportunities that are multi-cultural and/or charity based, such as World Book Day, International Language Day, Children In Need or Macmillan’s Cancer Research giving the children the opportunity to learn about different cultures, dress and foods and teaching them the importance of raising funds for those less fortunate than themselves. We also ensure that our education encompasses a variety of cultures in line with our school community, developing our global citizens ready for the next stage of their learning.
